The Mathews Group, LC was founded by attorney Joshua T. Mathews. Mr. Mathews started his career as a Tax and Transactions attorney, but was quickly recruited into business and personal civil litigation.



Mr. Mathews practices in areas from bankruptcy to federal criminal defense, (selected by the Department of Justice as a member of the CJA Panel). He opened The Mathews Group, LC because he fundamentally disagreed with many traditional legal practices, especially hourly billing, which in addition to creating a "blank check" for the attorney, dis-incentivized clients from communicating with their attorney about their legal issues.



The Mathews Group, LC has attorneys in Kansas and Missouri, and assists clients with Bankruptcy, Family Law, (Divorce and Child Custody), civil and criminal litigation, estate planning, tax planning and defense, and more.



Despite practicing in areas that are rife with scandal, like foreclosure defense and loan modification, The Mathews Group, LC maintains an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, largely as a result of our Promise of Fair Dealing and commitment to Constant Communication.

Dan is active in business and commercial law, litigating civil matters, estate and business planning, oil and gas, real estate, and advocating for creditors in bankruptcy proceedings. He has experience representing business clients ranging from banks to farms and dairies, and from cities to telephone companies and commercial toy and novelty distributors.

Dan grew up in Kansas, earning his undergraduate degree from Fort Hays State University. He served four years in the U.S. Navy in San Diego before returning to Kansas to graduate from the University of Kansas School of Law.

While in law school he served as an intern for the Paul E. Wilson Defender Project. Dan was also a staff member for the Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy which published his article on security interests in farm products. Kan. J.L. & Pub. Pol’y, Winter, 1999, at 342.

He is a member of the Kansas and Franklin County Bar Associations, and a former President of the latter. He started working at Anderson Byrd as a law clerk in 1998, began his practice of law the following year, and opened Covington Law in 2009. He serves as a Board Member for several non-profit organizations, and coaches youth sports. He is licensed to practice in all courts in Kansas, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

After completing my education and working for 7+ years with a downtown Kansas City business law firm, I started a solo practice dedicated to serving the needs of my clients as effectively and as efficiently as possible. I keep my overhead low so that I am able to provide competent legal assistance for fees lower than big law firms. I put my masters in tax law degree to use in my practice which focuses on estate planning and probate law, where I was recognized in 2008 and 2009 as a Super Lawyer-Rising Star in Kansas and Missouri, taxation, business law and traffic/DUIs. I also have an extensive practice in divorces and adoptions. Finally, my office also serves the needs of clients in landlord/tenant, real estate and contract law.
