Milord A. Keshishian practices law with a focus on intellectual property rights. That struck him as distinctly unfair and a potential restraint on future creativity and financial reward. It was then that he began pursuing his law degree in order to practice intellectual property law and help protect the innovative work of creative minds. Milord received his Juris Doctorate from Pepperdine University School of Law in 1998. He also studied intellectual property law at the world renowned Franklin Pierce Law Center in New Hampshire.

Milord realized immediately that even the most brilliant people often need help obtaining the right protection for their ideas and structuring resultant business transactions.

"I remember a news piece about the inventor of in-line skates," recounts Milord, "describing how he had sold his rights to the patent and the Rollerblade company for a payment of $100,000. I knew right then that this inventor had just lost millions of dollars in licensing fees, yet all it would have taken was some guidance on approaching that transaction differently."

It was also important from the beginning that Milord & Associates provide their expertise bearing in mind the client's business goal. "Nothing is more rewarding," Milord says with satisfaction, "than resolving a big case for a client and then hear them comment on how attentive we were to their case and business objective."

Milord has representative clients ranging from large Fortune 100 companies to independent inventors.

He has lectured regularly in the area of intellectual property law at the California Manufacturing Technology Center, Small Business Development Center, and various universities. Selected Verdicts and Settlements:

Represented Tosco Corporation against New Hampshire Ins. Company in a bad faith action for failure to provide defense or indemnity for Tosco as an additional insured. The court granted summary adjudication holding that the insurance company had a duty to defend and indemnify Tosco in the underlying action. In the subsequent bad faith trial the jury awarded $450,000 in compensatory damages and $18,200,000 in punitive damages. (The punitive damage award was subsequently reduced by the trial judge to $4,550,000.)

Represented a vendor in a fraud and breach of contract action against a major oil company which exercised an option to terminate a multi-year contract after only nine months. Settlement was $2,500,000.

Represented an attorney in a legal malpractice action seeking over $1,000,000 in carnages. Alter a three week jury trial defendant's motion for a directed verdict was granted at the conclusion of the evidence.

Represented a plaintiff in an action arising from the puncture of an underground storage tank at a service station, resulting in extensive soil contamination. Settlement was $800,000.

Represented multiple individual plaintiffs asserting fraud in the sale of Universal Life Insurance policies. Settlements were over $1,000,000 in total.

I am licensed as a California attorney and have been in practice since 1976. I also passed the California Certified Public Accountant's Exam in 1976. I have a dynamic and sophisticated transactional practice and provide creative, practical solutions to the issues confronting medium to high net worth individual clients, and small to medium sized entrepreneurial businesses. I advise clients, CPAs and other attorneys regarding the following:

ESTATE AND TRUST MATTERS: including wills, trusts, gifts, life insurance, estate administration, trust administration, probate estates, how to minimize or eliminate estate taxes, proper allocation of assets into trusts with extensive pre and post death analysis. I prepare all documentation for an estate plan including powers of attorney for health care and general powers of attorney. I prepare estate tax returns and gift tax returns. I prepare Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts and Trusts for Children and Grandchildren, as well as Special Needs Trusts. I also invest the assets of various trusts and estates, and, as a fiduciary, prepare all accountings, and interact with the donors and beneficiaries of the trusts that I manage. I advise Trustees and Beneficiaries on their rights and obligations.

BUSINESS MATTERS: including organization, capital formation, merger and consolidation; sale and acquisition of stock and assets; reorganization, recapitalization, liquidation and dissolution of corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies and joint ventures; licensing, distribution and supply arrangements, credit and financing arrangements, intellectual property matters and executive compensation and other shareholder, member, officer and employee-related matters.

REAL ESTATE MATTERS:including purchases and sales, construction, leasing, renting, financing, and exchanges. I consult with and am consulted by appraisers and other fiduciaries in all areas of my practice.
