After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah in 1999, Daniel E. Kann earned his law degree from the University of San Francisco, School of Law. While still in law school, Dan took part in a program at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office that allowed him to take on criminal defense cases as a law student. Through his work with the Public Defender’s Office, Attorney Kann found his calling and to this day continues to fight for the rights of defendants facing criminal charges.

Admitted to the State Bar of California in 2004, Attorney Kann began his legal career working at a private criminal defense firm. He then joined the Kern County Public Defenders Office, where it took him less than three years to work his way up from handling clients charged with misdemeanor offenses to handling felony trials. In 2008, Daniel Kann started his own practice, The Law Offices of Daniel E. I have been a highly successful trial lawyer for 30 years, with extensive experience in many different areas. My primary focus, however, is civil and business litigation.

MY CLIENTS

I have represented hundreds of businesses and individuals in matters ranging from simple contract or business disputes, to matters as complex as patent and antritrust litigation, and everything in between.

No case is too small or simple, or too large or complex. If I choose to take a case, I will give that case my utmost attention and interest regardless of its size or complexity.

I humbly like to think I have attained a high level of respect from my peers and clients, as well as from the judges I have been appearing before for the past 30 years.

As a former clerk for the California Supreme Court, and judge pro tem of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, I have a unique appreciation for what makes a compelling presentation, and winning case.

I was once described by a senior federal district court judge as one of the top three attorneys who had ever practiced before him.

I valued that endorsement, as much as the praise I received from the late Stanley Mosk when I clerked under him on the California Supreme Court, and as much as the honor I had in being an associate editor of the California Law Review while attending the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall Law School.

TOUGH, BUT FAIR

I am a tough, battle-hardened trial lawyer who has passion for the practice of law.

I am fierecly competitive, and have a have frequently been described by both clients and adversaries as a " "bulldog'.

While I fight hard to win cases, I also consider myself to have good common sense and a modicum of fairness. These skills help me quickly size up a case, and know when to fight, and when to settle.

It is at least as satisfying for me to settle a case fairly, and without large fees, as it is to win after a long and difficult trial. Thus, I will try hard to settle a case, but only on terms I belive are fair to my clients.

OTHER INTERESTS

While I enjoy the practice of law, and devote whatever time is required to achieve success, I have many other interests as well.

I have two sets of twin boys, all of whom are in elementary school, and a beautiful wife, who in her former life was an excellent family law lawyer. I treasure the time I get to spend with all of them.

I am also an avid sports fan, and would-be athlete. In my younger days, I played a lot of tennis, basketball, and baseball. Nowadays, the most exercise I get is chasing, or being chased, by my four boys.

All in all I consider myself fortunate to have an excellent law practice and a great family.

WHY I AM SELECTIVE ABOUT THE CASES I TAKE

Clients frequently ask why I don't work for a firm, or hire a bunch of associates, and run a law mill that cranks out the cases and billable hours.

After being an associate at a huge law firm, and a partner in a boutque Westside firm, I have come to realize I am better able to serve my clients by handling the cases myself.

In that manner, I can control both the quality of the work, as well as the billable hours.

As a criminal law attorney with more than 11 years of experience in criminal defense, I have spent my entire career fighting for the constitutional protection of my clients. Unlike many other private criminal defense attorneys in Ventura County, I have never worked for the District Attorney's Office, and have never prosecuted anyone. I began my career as a Deputy Public Defender in Mendocino County, before transferring to Santa Barbara County and ultimately to Ventura County in 2000, where I remained as a Deputy Public Defender for 7 years. As a tireless and passionate public defender for nearly 10 years, I gained experience in criminal defense that cannot be duplicated. I have tried numerous misdemeanor and felony cases, handled hundreds of preliminary hearings and argued numerous types of motions. I have worked in and am familiar with every criminal courtroom in Ventura County. After working in the proposition 36 courtroom for several years, I have extensive experience with drug and alcohol addiction. Additionally, my experience in the mental health court has given me extensive insight into mental illness. I am well acquainted with the District Attorney's Office and all of the criminal judges and commissioners in the County.

Although my time with the Public Defender's Office was positive overall, I felt that I could not give my clients the representation they deserved because of my large caseload. So, in 2007 I chose to leave the Public Defender's Office and become a private attorney, where I could give each and every one of my clients the personal attention and representation they deserve. Due to my experience in criminal defense law, I have been contracted by the County of Ventura to handle and defend conflict cases. I also serve as an adjunct professor of criminal law at the Southern California Institute of Law.

I enjoy the individual time I am able to spend on each of my client's cases, and it is important to me that each of them is completely satisfied with my representation.
