Evelyn is a solo practitioner with a wealth of experience including work as a prosecuting attorney and a defender of parents in child protective custody cases. Evelyn draws upon her U.S. Peace Corps experience as well as her New York street smarts to work for you. She offers common sense direction and straight forward advice to her clients.

Evelyn's background includes training and volunteer work in Sexual Assault Victim Witness Advocacy and Crisis Line Suicide Intervention as well as leadership in the field of Public Health addressing Minority Health issues in California. As a law student, Evelyn spent time in London England studying International Human Rights Law and successfully incorporates these principles in her legal arguments.

Evelyn's philosophy: "The law is always about fairness. My job is to understand my client and his or her unique situation and develop a strategy that will inform the court and other parties of why a certain outcome is the correct legal choice. Negotiation is always the preferred method of dealing with a legal crisis, and the fact that I am willing and able to take a matter to trial is the backbone of any successful negotiation. Evelyn assists parents and De Facto parents in California Child Protective Services cases. She assists families in child custody litigation in Family Law Court in Sacramento County. Her criminal defense practice is focused on first offenders accused in felony and misdemeanor complaints in Sacramento and Yolo Counties.

Mr. King began his legal career with the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office as a California State Bar Certified Law Student. He has defended juveniles during Sacramento County Juvenile Court detention hearings, assisted psychiatric patients placed on Conservatorship holds, and represented in-custody and out-of-custody clients during Sacramento Superior Court misdemeanor arraignments. Mr. King twice earned academic honors for his internship work at the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office.

After graduation, Mr. King served as a Law Clerk and Deputy District Attorney in Del Norte County where he prosecuted felony and misdemeanor juvenile cases. As a prosecutor, Mr. King conducted approximately fifty juvenile contested hearings, a domestic violence jury trial, prepared, submitted, and regularly argued criminal memoranda in Del Norte County Superior Court, and successfully negotiated multiple plea bargains with defense counsel. He has won felony and misdemeanor convictions for offenses such as Robbery, Burglary, Theft, Resisting Arrest, Assault and Battery, Vandalism, Drug Use, Drug Possession, Drug Sales, and Driving Under the Influence.

In addition, Mr. King has researched and prepared civil rights memoranda for submission to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, and litigated construction, contract, fraud, and internet libel matters.

Since opening his own practice, Mr. King now appears in the Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, Yuba, Nevada, Alameda, El Dorado, San Joaquin, and Solano County Courts on DUI, criminal, traffic, juvenile, and family law matters. He has effected dismissals ranging from domestic violence temporary restraining orders to felony conspiracy, and negotiated multiple plea bargains with county prosecutors. In addition, he regularly litigates family law matters ranging from child custody and support to non-contested marital dissolution.


Mr. King is a 2005 graduate of McGeorge School of Law and has been a member of the California State Bar since 2006.

Ms. Henderson has been representing clients in criminal and juvenile cases since 1997. Her clients have been found not guilty on all counts in over half of her trials. The focus is always to understand the personal needs of the client (obtaining employment in the future, licensing, how the case impacts the client personally, professionally, legally and emotionally.) Often times success is gauged in reducing time,protecting the client's record for the future (avoiding strikes, priors, prison) and looking at alternative sentences.

The approach to criminal defendants in most counties in California is very impersonal and often times unbending. The legislature has limited many of the protections that were once afforded people accused of a crime. They allowed themselves to be influenced by fear and a corrections model. Many of our clients today pled guilty to a strike, either as a very young person or when they were juveniles not knowing the affect it would have in the future. Those strikes are alleged on most complaints to encourage you to plead,increase the penalty, and require a prison sentence. One way to avoid this is to educate yourself and others about their legal rights so that they do not make the same mistakes the previous generation has made.

If bail is a possibility let your attorney know. In Sacramento a two day notice for bail or release on OR must be given to the District Attorney. Decisions that an attorney can make for you are whether requesting a reduction in bail will risk it being raised significantly and whether the judge that you are in front of is one who will listen fairly to the facts. Clients are often much better off out of custody so that they can access services through their own resources to show the court that the allegations are either not true or an anomaly.

The Sacramento jail has been the subject of numerous law suits and suicides in the past several years and is not a place where you or anyone you care about should stay for any length of time. Ms. Henderson's concern for the medical, mental health care and conditions in the juvenile halls and jails has led her to involvement in civil rights cases against the Sacramento County jail.

Ms. Henderson represents clients in Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo, Marysville, Placer, El Dorado, San Joaquin counties, Alameda, Contra Costa County. Recall petitions from the California Youth Authority/DJJ are handled all across the state.

Bill came to Nevada City in 1983 to join the Nevada County Public Defendner's office at a time when he was the youngest attorney ever to practice in the county. He was the attorney for that office in Truckee Court for several years, while practicing Juvenile Law and Misdemeanor defense in Nevada City's Court. For most of his nearly 21 years in the Public Defendner's office, Bill handled the most serious and complicated felony cases, and help train and mentor some of the other attorneys in the office. Bill retired from the office in 2004, to pursue a private practice and to write and teach. He remains committed to providing personalized professional service at low cost to his clients.

Jude is an experienced, local Truckee/Tahoe City attorney who is a former prosecutor with the Truckee Division of the Nevada County District Attorney's Office.
