KIRK NYSTROM, Attorney


Kirk Nystrom has practiced law in Topeka for about 30 years primarily in the areas of Wills, Powers of Attorney, Living Wills, Trusts, Probate, Estate Planning, Real Estate and Small Business Law. He has taught Real Estate Fundamentals at Washburn University. In law school he marketed real estate as a real estate broker.
He is a lecturer regularly presenting seminars to lawyers, churches, civic and other professional groups on Estate Planning, Probate, Real Estate and Trusts.
Kirk belongs to various attorney organizations including the Kansas Bar Association, (Probate and Real Estate Sections), Topeka Bar Association, Northeast Kansas Estate Planning Roundtable, Topeka Probate Bar and Christian Legal Society. He has served as an officer in various community organizations including Shawnee County Community Action, Save the Historic Jayhawk Theater, Church Board, Boy Scouts, School Board, and Christian Neighbor Center (an outreach to the disadvantaged).
His wife of 30 years , Karin, is his legal secretary. Robert Stockton, a fellow attorney, assists in the office.

Dan is active in business and commercial law, litigating civil matters, estate and business planning, oil and gas, real estate, and advocating for creditors in bankruptcy proceedings. He has experience representing business clients ranging from banks to farms and dairies, and from cities to telephone companies and commercial toy and novelty distributors.

Dan grew up in Kansas, earning his undergraduate degree from Fort Hays State University. He served four years in the U.S. Navy in San Diego before returning to Kansas to graduate from the University of Kansas School of Law.

While in law school he served as an intern for the Paul E. Wilson Defender Project. Dan was also a staff member for the Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy which published his article on security interests in farm products. Kan. J.L. & Pub. Pol’y, Winter, 1999, at 342.

He is a member of the Kansas and Franklin County Bar Associations, and a former President of the latter. He started working at Anderson Byrd as a law clerk in 1998, began his practice of law the following year, and opened Covington Law in 2009. He serves as a Board Member for several non-profit organizations, and coaches youth sports. He is licensed to practice in all courts in Kansas, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

Malissa L. Walden is a native Kansan with an international perspective. After years of living abroad, she returned to pursue her life-long dream of helping others through the practice of law. She has dedicated her career to public service and fully understands the needs of her clients. Ms. Waldenâs main areas of practice include Bankruptcy, Estate Planning, and Domestic.

Not only was Ms. Walden the first attorney at her firm to practice under the new Bankruptcy Code; she also assisted attorneys across the state to become Electronic Case Filing compliant. Due to her experience in Bankruptcy, she is aware that it is not the best option for every client. Because of this, she has a history of advising clients on Bankruptcy alternatives, and negotiating settlements with Collection and Credit Card Companies. She has helped to guide clients through the stressful actions necessary to deal with creditors. Ms. Walden knows and can explain clearly exactly what rights her clients have and how to respond to creditorsâ unwanted calls.

As the previous Elder Law Project Manager for a statewide non-profit, she has handled all stages of Estate Planning, appeared at Social Security Disability Appeal Hearings, advised clients regarding Medicaid/Division of Assets, Medicare, and Health-related collection. She has met with clients and given presentations throughout the state regarding these issues.

Ms. Walden has a history of quality representation. She has helped many families through, what can be very difficult and emotional situations, such as an Annulment, Divorce, Paternity Action, Visitation, Custody, Child Support, Guardianship, Conservatorship, Abuse proceeding, or Name Change. DENNIS DEPEW is the Administrative Partner in the Depew Law Firm in Neodesha, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Degree and the University of Kansas School of Law in 1983. He has served on the Kansas Bar Association's Board of Governors since being elected in 2005. He has over 26 years of experience in handling family law matters such as adoptions, child custody litigation, child support disputes as well as both straightforward and complex divorce cases. His clients have been located throughout Southeast Kansas, including the cities of Chanute, Coffeyville, Fredonia, Independence, Neodesha and Parsons. He has many years of experience in estate planning and non-profit organizations. Dennis is approved by the Kansas Supreme Court as a Civil as well as a Domestic Law Mediator. He has been appointed as a Domestic Case Manager and Special Master by judges in especially difficult family law matters to resolve these particularly complex cases. Dennis has served as Chairman of several Professional Negligence Screening Panels. He has served as both President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Kansas Bar Association's Alternative Dispute Resolution Section. Dennis has served on the Kansas Board of Discipline since first being appointed by the Kansas Supreme Court in 1999 and has lectured on the subject of Ethics at various seminars.
