In addition to patent litigation, William worked in negotiating software and technology licenses for a major hedge fund. These are some of the milestones you need to reach before securing a patent:

1. Conduct research to ensure that your idea isn't already registered (it is recommended that this done manually as it is more reliable).
2. Produce a specialist report that will detail any conflicting claims.
3. Apply for Intellectual Property protection, of which there are six types- Provisional, Utility, Design, Plant, Re-issue and Defensive Publication (a good lawyer will be able to advise on which one is best for you).
4. It is an uncommon occurrence for the patent to be accepted the first time. There can be up to two applications, and even if the second application is turned down there are a number of possibilities open to the inventor, such as a re-filing the application, a continuation in part application or a full appeal.

Lisa Renee Pomerantz has more than twenty-five years of varied legal experience. After graduating cum laude from Radcliffe College of Harvard University and from Boston University Law School where she was on the Law Review, Lisa spent a year as a law clerk to a federal court judge. Following a stint as a litigation attorney in private practice, she worked for more than fifteen years as a senior level in-house attorney for a major corporation. Her responsibilities there included transactional matters, compliance initiatives, dispute resolution and counseling clients on a broad variety of corporate, employment, antitrust and intellectual property matters.

Since 2003, Lisa has had her own practice. She works with innovative and creative enterprises to structure and foster successful business relationships and to resolve disputes amicably and cost-effectively. Her dispute resolution activities include membership on the American Arbitration Association’s Roster of Neutrals as a Commercial Mediator and Arbitrator. Lisa also develops and presents creative and effective interactive training programs, is a popular keynote speaker at business, association and educational events, and publishes a monthly newsletter entitled “Making the Connection.”

Lisa is a recognized leader in the business and legal communities. Lisa is Vice-Chair of the Suffolk County Women’s Business Enterprise Coalition, and has served as Co-Chair of its Trade Show Committee. She also has served on the Planning and Education Committees of the Women’s Expo, and on the Nominating and Awards Program Committees for the Long Island Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators.

In the legal community, Lisa has chaired the Suffolk County Bar Association’s Alternative Dispute Resolution and Intellectual Property Committees, and has been an Officer and Advisory Board member of the Suffolk Academy of Law. In 2007, Lisa was honored to receive the Suffolk County Bar Association Directors’ Award in recognition of her service as ADR Committee Co-Chair. She also received Awards of Recognition in 2004 for her contributions to continuing legal education and as Intellectual Property Committee Co-Chair.
