I was born in Wilmington, NC on November 19, 1968 and have been lucky enough to live in Wilmington my entire life except for the eight years I went to college and law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

After graduation from UNC in 1995, I began working in civil litigation for Anderson, Cox and Ennis and continued there when it morphed into Anderson, Daniel and Coxe.

In 2005, I started a new firm, Hodges & Coxe, PC, with a friend and fellow attorney I met while back in college, Wes Hodges. At Hodges & Coxe, and before with Anderson, Daniel and Coxe, I represented both plaintiffs and defendants with all types of civil litigation, including personal injury, medical malpractice, construction disputes, employment and business disputes, and other contract disputes.

I married my wife, Julie, in 2000 and have a daughter, Ella, born in 2002, and a son, Gavin, born in 2006.

Melissa Dewey Brumback is an Av-rated litigation partner at Ragsdale Liggett PLLC, where she focuses her practice on construction law and business disputes. Who am I? I am a lawyer who has been practicing for almost 24 years. For that entire period of time, I have only handled personal injury cases, nothing else. I understand that the important things in life are not things at all...but integrity, values and loved ones..family and friends alike.

I do not represent corporations and I sure don’t represent insurance companies. I represent ordinary people. Why? Well, when I was about 22 years old, I was working on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico as a roustabout and later a part-time roughneck on a drilling floor. I was trying to make some high dollar quick money to save for law school tuition. One day while boarding a rig from a crew boat, I witnessed a boom of an enormous crane fall and as it fell it killed several men and severely injured several others within a few feet of where I was located. The boom fell due to a cable that had snapped. Several months later I entered my first year of law school and was haunted as to why that cable gave way killing those men. Obviously, it had not been inspected or maintained properly. Really, from that point on in my life I knew who I was going to represent and the type of law that I was going to practice. That is my story. I am licensed in three States: North Carolina, New York and New Jersey. I have tried cases in all three States both in State and Federal Court. I currently limit my practice to North Carolina but would have the ability to try cases in New York and New Jersey as well.

I do not advertise on television or by billboard or direct mail as some lawyers do. I don’t believe in it. Most of my clients have been referred by former clients, other attorneys and by word of mouth. Once a client, always a client. That is the goal. Relationships count.

Ric received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Honors Program at the School of Engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh (1973). He received his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1977).

*Specialized Training*

Ric has augmented his training in advocacy and mediation. In 1996 he was certified to conduct mediated settlement conferences in Superior Court Civil actions. In 1999 he was certified to conduct mediation of equitable distribution and other family financial cases in District Court actions. In 1999 he also completed a professional intensive training program by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.

Ric has been admitted to practice before the General Courts of Justice in North Carolina (1977) and Colorado (2009), the District Courts of the United States of America (1977), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, in Richmond, Virginia (1987).

Bill Cannon is a native of Leesburg, Georgia and has been practicing law for more than 30 years. He focuses his practice in the area of civil litigation and has extensive experience in complex litigation. He has a keen interest in professionalism and has been a speaker for orientations on professionalism at law schools. Before entering private practice in Raleigh in 1984, Burton was a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He has served as President of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice, President of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, Chair of the ACLU-NC Legal Committee, Treasurer of Legal Aid of North Carolina, and Co-Chair of the Civil Procedure Study Commission. He currently serves as Legal Affairs Counsel for the North Carolina Advocates for Justice and co-chairs the North Carolina Bar Association's Tort Issues Task Force.

In addition to his professional work, Burton chairs the board of the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood and has, since 2000, served as a volunteer tutor/mentor for elementary school students through Wake County Communities in Schools.

Burton has received the Walter Clark Award from the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers and the W.W. Finlator Award from the Wake County Chapter of the ACLU of North Carolina. He was selected as a member of Business North Carolina's Legal Elite in the area of Litigation and is listed in The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of Medical Malpractice, Labor and Employment and Personal Injury. His practice includes medical malpractice, civil rights and dispute resolution.
