Dan is active in business and commercial law, litigating civil matters, estate and business planning, oil and gas, real estate, and advocating for creditors in bankruptcy proceedings. He has experience representing business clients ranging from banks to farms and dairies, and from cities to telephone companies and commercial toy and novelty distributors.

Dan grew up in Kansas, earning his undergraduate degree from Fort Hays State University. He served four years in the U.S. Navy in San Diego before returning to Kansas to graduate from the University of Kansas School of Law.

While in law school he served as an intern for the Paul E. Wilson Defender Project. Dan was also a staff member for the Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy which published his article on security interests in farm products. Kan. J.L. & Pub. Pol’y, Winter, 1999, at 342.

He is a member of the Kansas and Franklin County Bar Associations, and a former President of the latter. He started working at Anderson Byrd as a law clerk in 1998, began his practice of law the following year, and opened Covington Law in 2009. He serves as a Board Member for several non-profit organizations, and coaches youth sports. He is licensed to practice in all courts in Kansas, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

KIRK NYSTROM, Attorney


Kirk Nystrom has practiced law in Topeka for about 30 years primarily in the areas of Wills, Powers of Attorney, Living Wills, Trusts, Probate, Estate Planning, Real Estate and Small Business Law. He has taught Real Estate Fundamentals at Washburn University. In law school he marketed real estate as a real estate broker.
He is a lecturer regularly presenting seminars to lawyers, churches, civic and other professional groups on Estate Planning, Probate, Real Estate and Trusts.
Kirk belongs to various attorney organizations including the Kansas Bar Association, (Probate and Real Estate Sections), Topeka Bar Association, Northeast Kansas Estate Planning Roundtable, Topeka Probate Bar and Christian Legal Society. He has served as an officer in various community organizations including Shawnee County Community Action, Save the Historic Jayhawk Theater, Church Board, Boy Scouts, School Board, and Christian Neighbor Center (an outreach to the disadvantaged).
His wife of 30 years , Karin, is his legal secretary. Robert Stockton, a fellow attorney, assists in the office.

After completing my education and working for 7+ years with a downtown Kansas City business law firm, I started a solo practice dedicated to serving the needs of my clients as effectively and as efficiently as possible. I keep my overhead low so that I am able to provide competent legal assistance for fees lower than big law firms. I put my masters in tax law degree to use in my practice which focuses on estate planning and probate law, where I was recognized in 2008 and 2009 as a Super Lawyer-Rising Star in Kansas and Missouri, taxation, business law and traffic/DUIs. I also have an extensive practice in divorces and adoptions. Finally, my office also serves the needs of clients in landlord/tenant, real estate and contract law.
