David Ray Jones
Decker and Jones
Mr. Jones was raised in Auburn, Alabama and also obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Auburn University where his father taught for many years. After college, he moved to Colorado where he obtained his Juris Doctorate in 1996 from the University of Denver, College of Law.
In law school, Mr. Jones focused his efforts in the area of trial practice and appellate argument. He was active in Moot Court routinely representing his law school in mock trial competitions all over the nation. In 1995, his team won the American Bar Association’s Regional Trial Competition and at the end of that year Mr. Jones was awarded an American Jurisprudence Award for Trial Advocacy. During his second two years of law school, Mr. Jones volunteered with the state public defender’s office and while practicing law under the Student Practice Act he won the first case he ever tried to a jury before graduating from law school.
After law school, Mr. Jones committed eleven years with the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office where he tried well over thirty cases to the court and fifty cases to a jury.
Mr. Jones’ trial record with the Public Defender’s Office was remarkable having obtained outright acquittals in nearly half of the cases he tried to a jury. During his career at the public defender’s office, Mr. Jones was a teacher and was responsible for training less experienced lawyers. Mr. Jones started his own criminal defense practice in 2008. He continues to teach when time allows, helping coach college mock trial teams and guest teaching trial advocacy for local law schools and universities.
Mr. Jones is member of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar and National Association of Trial Advocacy. He is active in community efforts which work toward improving the criminal justice system.
