Michael is an experienced criminal defense attorney, concentrating in state and federal CRIMINAL APPELLATE, HABEAS CORPUS, AND POSTCONVICTION LITIGATION. Michael has defended homicide, serious felony, and misdemeanor cases and has handled complex federal sentencing and parole matters. Michael devotes a significant part of his practice to the representation of professors, physicians, postdocs, and other scientists accused of SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH MISCONDUCT and also of students accused of plagiarism, ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT, & sexual misconduct at area law schools, medical schools, hospitals, and colleges in Boston and in other parts of the country, including at Babson, Boston College, Boston University, Brandeis, Brown, Cal Tech, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard College, Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, Holyoke, MIT, Tufts, U. Penn., U. Texas, Yale and at universities & hospitals in other regions of the country. Michael worked as a Public Defender in Boston at the Committee for Public Counsel Services (1985-93), as an associate to Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz (1993-97), and as a consultant with The Spangenberg Group to provide training and technical assistance to indigent defense providers in other states and in foreign jurisdictions (Cambodia, Chile, and China). Michael served for nine years as Lecturer in Law at Boston University Law School where he taught a seminar on "Wrongful Convictions, Miscarriages of Justice, & the US Criminal Justice System." Michael's cases have often involved international human rights, national security, export controls, international law, and constitutional civil rights issues. Michael has won significant victories in murder, labor racketeering, and export violations cases.
