Rand is the founder of Bateman IP Law Group, specializing in the protection of Intellectual Property. His experience includes complex litigation, and prosecution of patent, trademark and copyright matters. Rand has represented clients from across the United States and several foreign countries. He has obtained approximately 400 patents, and has filed over 1,200 trademark applications. Rand has also litigated numerous patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret matters ranging from architectural copyright cases to patent cases in which his clients received million dollar settlements and cases in which Rand successfully invalidated every claim in multiple patents asserted against his client.

- Q. How do I know if the kayak I am purchasing from another country is not patented here in the USA?
- A: If you are buying items on Alibaba or other similar cites and intend on reselling them, it is very important to do a patent search to try and determine if the product is patented. If it looks very similar to another product, you should see if the product indicates that it has a patent or patent pending. You can be held liable for patent infringement if you are selling a product covered by a patent - even if you did not know. If you are serious about selling, talk to a patent attorney.
- Q. Do i have to obtain a lawyer that lives in my state ?
- A: This is a great question. For many areas of law it is best to hire an attorney in the state where you have your dispute or other legal issue. Many areas of law like family law and contracts can vary from state to state. If you are getting divorced, you want a divorce attorney who knows the laws of your state well. You also want an attorney who knows the judges that your case will likely be before. There is an old adage that a good attorney knows the law and a great attorney knows the judge.
