As a native of Charleston, SC, Sam Clawson Jr. attended the University of South Carolina for both his undergraduate studies and law school. After obtaining his Juris Doctorate, Sam continued his education at the State University of New York Maritime College at Fort Schulyer, where he graduated with honors with a Master of Science in International Transportation Management and Merchant Marine deck officer’s license. Sam sailed deep sea for several years as a deck officer on unlimited tonnage vessels for leading international container liner Maersk. He most recently sailed on the SeaLand Meteor, a nearly 1,000 foot containership engaged in trade between the east coast of the United States and northern Europe. Sam currently holds United States Coast Guard licenses as a Second Mate Any Gross Tons Oceans and as a Master Not More Than One Hundred Tons Near Coastal. Sam has served as an Adjunct Professor in the Naval Science Department at The Citadel, instructing senior Naval ROTC cadets in terrestrial navigation and the nautical Rules of the Road. He has also authored a number of articles on Rules of the Road and regulatory issues for professional journals covering the maritime industry. Sam has been licensed to practice law since 2008. His primary practice areas include admiralty & maritime, dram shop, day care abuse & neglect, premises liability, negligent security and personal injury cases involving serious injury or death. Sam also has experience in the practice areas of abuse of process, defamation, malicious prosecution, motor vehicle liability, products liability and wrongful arrest. His industry clients include commercial vessel owners, recreational vessel rental facilities, bars, restaurants, childcare centers and commercial premises owners.
