Judge Barber presided over all types of criminal jury trials from DWI to first degree murder; and major civil trials including personal injury, malpractice, property and business disputes and consumer issues. As the Senior Resident Judge in Orange and Chatham Counties, he set the policies for and administered the Superior Courts and managed the cases.

Mr. Barber established his own law firm for the general practice of law in 1985 which quickly grew to be the largest firm in Chatham County. During the early years, he focused on civil and business litigation. In 1988 he became general counsel for Governors Club Development Corporation handling most all types of business matters; however, he continued to represent 100's of individuals and small businesses in various matters. He also represented clients in capital cases.

Wade Barber was chosen to be the District Attorney for Chatham and Orange Counties when he was only 33 years old. In addition to personally prosecuting over 100 jury trials, he established the first dispute settlement program (which became a national model)and adopted innovative measures for the detection, investigation and prosecution of rape and child sex offenses (which became a model for the state. In recognition of his leadership, Mr. Barber was elected President of the North Carolina Association of District Attorneys in 1981.
