Biography

I'm a solo general practice attorney, focusing on wills, probate, and estate planning, but I also handle family law cases and other various civil matters. I enjoy helping folks protect what they've worked hard to obtain, preserving their wealth for their families. I grew up in Maryville before my dad’s career relocated our family to Missouri while I was in high school. Prior to attending law school, I served as Assistant Communications Director and Director of Constituent Services for Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder, worked as a licensed investment rep for Edward Jones, and delivered marketing and communications results for Enactus, an international nonprofit. In 2013, I moved back home to the Knoxville area to open my law practice. In my off time, I enjoy spending time with my family, participating in my church, and following politics and sports.

Legal Answers
Q. How do I set up a small estate for my sister that passed away in Cedar Rapids, IA?
A: If you were the sole named beneficiary on the life insurance policy, you should be able to fill out the company's claim form, supplying whatever documentation they require, and get the proceeds without the need for probate. There is a distinction between probate assets and non-probate assets, and usually life insurance proceeds are not probate assets. However, if the policy named her estate as a beneficiary or a beneficiary predeceased her, the company may try to pay it out to an estate. Consult with a local probate attorney if the life insurance company will not cooperate with you.
