Getting Divorced Without Losing Your Mind®
The Day Everything Changed
I was eight years old when my mother disappeared. One day, she was there—her voice in the kitchen, her shoes by the door. And then, she was gone.
I waited for her after school, but bedtime came, breakfast came, and she still wasn’t there. No one could explain why she left me and my sister. No one could tell us what we had done.
She called just once. “I’m at the mall,” she said. “I love you.” But she never came home. Not that night. Not for months.
Days and weeks filled up with waiting, and sadness, and shame.
I didn’t understand lawyers, custody battles, or bank accounts. I only understood that there was silence where she was supposed to be. Her chair was empty at dinner. Didn’t she want us anymore?
My father stood in the doorway at night, exhausted but trying to hold everything together. My mom was supposed to do that. Where was she? My world no longer made sense.
Divorce doesn’t just break marriages—it fractures lives. It upends everything you thought was certain. It leaves you lying awake at night, staring at the ceiling, wondering how you got here and what happens next.
I know because I lived it. And I see it every day in my clients, in their children.
That’s why I do this work.
My job as your lawyer isn’t to fuel the fight, but to protect what matters. The core of you, your wellbeing, your children’s sense that they’re safe, that life can continue.
The real work is to give you back control when you’re spinning in disbelief and anger and confusion. Because divorce isn’t just about the legal system—it’s about your future, your children, your ability to wake up one day and feel whole again.
