Henry Murphy Burgoyne III
Burgoyne Law Group
Hank Burgoyne is an AV-rated counselor and litigator with more than a dozen years' experience advising technology and other businesses on commercial, intellectual property, advertising, speech, trade secret and data security issues. Hank has particular expertise in digital forensics and evidence, and in licensing, outsourcing, development and similar technology-related transactions.
Hank has successfully represented plaintiffs and defendants in some of California's most important Internet-related advertising cases, both at the trial court level and before the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. A former reporter and newsroom lawyer, Hank counsels clients on copyright, defamation, trademark, privacy and other communications-related issues, and has successfully litigated dozens of lawsuits in those areas. Hank also advises information owners on trade secret and data theft matters, as well as technology-related businesses on intellectual property, investment and other commercial transactions.
Hank graduated with distinction from Stanford Law School, where he was a teaching assistant to former Dean Kathleen M. Sullivan, one of the nation's foremost First Amendment scholars. He then clerked for U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup in San Francisco. After his clerkship, Hank litigated intellectual property and technology-related cases for Keker & Van Nest, an American Lawyer "Litigation Boutique of the Year." Prior to founding the Burgoyne Law Group, Hank also negotiated intellectual property and technology agreements for the Silicon Valley office of Greenberg Traurig, and spent five years as a name partner at Kronenberger Burgoyne, an Internet counseling and litigation boutique he founded in 2006.
Hank first pursued his interest in online and other media as a reporter covering advertising, journalism and telecommunications policy. Hank has commented on Internet and mobile industry topics in the Wall Street Journal, Slate Magazine and other publications, and on traditional and Internet radio. He is a former copyright chair of the San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association, as well as an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels of San Francisco and California Lawyers for the Arts.
