Utah Bankruptcy attorney Russell B Weekes answers the question: What is Chapter 7? Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a liquidation. In a chapter 7, the debtor lists all of their assets and all of their debts. They self-appraise their assets based on what they believe the property would sell for at a fire sale...like a yard sale. Utah bankruptcy exemptions are then applied to protect all or as much of the property as possible. You can think of an exemption like a coupon that allows you to keep that property. All of the property that has an exemption (or coupon) is protected; anything that is unprotected or non-exempt, the debtor agrees to liquidate in exchange for a discharge. It is imperative that each bankruptcy case is carefully reviewed and exemptions are applied to the maximum extent permitted under the law. We have handled hundreds of chapter 7 cases in Utah and we carefully review each case to ensure that our clients keep ALL or as much of their property as legally permitted. Thank you for watching today's video. We hope that it was informative. I'm sure it didn't answer all of your questions about bankruptcy, so please call us or visit our website to schedule a no-cost initial consultation. We would be happy to discuss your specific situation and help you determine if bankruptcy is the right solution. Utah Bankruptcy What Is Chapter 7
