If you are like the majority of solo and small-firm lawyers practicing today, you have more than enough work to do and not enough time to do it. Your days are filled with court appearances, appointments and phone calls, so complex research and writing tasks (and not everyone likes to do them) get pushed to evenings and weekends, taking time away from family and other activities. I help other attorneys represent their own clients better by working as an independent contractor and taking some of these time-consuming tasks off their hands.

Research and writing is all I do because it is what I enjoy most about the practice of law - I'm not a natural trial lawyer. I decided to seek new challenges and redirect my career after eight years of handling a variety of matters in small towns in Kansas (over 400 new files opened in 1999!). During my third year in law school, I interned for the Hon. James A. Pusateri of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Kansas in Topeka, then transitioned to a paid clerkship after graduation. I also spent a couple of years in private practice in Kansas City, handling mostly bankruptcy and probate matters.

I have argued cases before the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Kansas Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, and the Missouri Court of Appeals, and I authored the winning briefs leading to the following published decisions: State v. Horn, ___ Kan. ___, 206 P.3d 526 (No. 100,373, 5/8/2009); State v. Fitzgerald, 286 Kan. 1124, 192 P.3d 171 (2008); State v. Anderson, 281 Kan. 896, 136 P.3d 406 (2006); U.S. Postal Serv. v. Dewey Freight System, Inc., 31 F.3d 620 (8th Cir. 1994); and Boatmen's First Nat. Bank v. Hawkeye-Security Ins. Co., 861 S.W.2d 600 (Mo.App.W.D. 1993). While clerking for Judge Pusateri, I drafted his decision in In re Carter, 125 B.R. 832 (Bankr.D.Kan. 1991).

You get predictable and dependable assistance from an experienced attorney when you need it, without the overhead expenses when you don't. You maintain control of your case and keep the client you've worked hard to cultivate. I have the same duties under the Model Rules regarding confidentiality and avoiding conflicts of interest. If you "closely supervise" my work or adopt it as your own and pay me a flat or hourly fee, you may not need to disclose to your client that I am working on the case - or that I may not be admitted to practice in your jurisdiction. An ABA Ethics Opinion (No. 00-420) instructs that if the total fee charged to your client is reasonable, you may add a surcharge (i.e., profit) to any of my fees billed as legal services.

Of late, my practice mostly involves criminal defense, with some civil and domestic work. I work with attorneys at every litigation phase, from trial through appeal. Regarding most of the documents I've posted, the problem with being a legal ghostwriter - just like being a law clerk for a bankruptcy judge or an associate at a law firm - is that some of my best work does not appear under my own name. I have written for each of these attorneys on more than one occasion, and I expect that each would tell you that he or she makes minimal, if any, editing to my work.

"Ghostwriting" is my "dream job." My laptop, cell phone and wireless broadband service mean that I am rarely "out of the office," even when I'm on the road to Kansas Jayhawk basketball games! Call me and let's talk about what I can do for you.

Jeff has been with Logan Logan & Watson, L.C. since 1995, working as a clerk for the firm while still in law school. He has since developed a practice that is focused primarily in the areas of defense of health care providers in medical malpractice actions and the defense of long-term care facilities in nursing home negligence actions. Jeff also has experience in other areas of litigation that have been as far ranging as matters involving allegations of misconduct against a mental health therapist to the alleged negligence of a ringside physician in an amateur boxing competition.

Jeff has successfully tried cases to juries in both Kansas and Missouri. Additionally, Jeff successfully prosecuted and tried numerous matters while an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Prairie Village, Kansas from 1996 through 2001.

Special education

Mr. Siegel has practiced law for more than 25 years. Not only does hold degrees from Princeton University and University of San Francisco School of Law, but he also holds a Masters of Laws in Taxation from Golden Gate University School of Law. His current practice emphasizes taxation, but he has tried cases all over the country and as far away as Guam and Saipan. He has personally argued at the Supreme Court of the United States. He has vast experience, not only in taxation, but in business law and all areas of business litigation. He believes that his clients deserve determined and high quality representation at an affordable fee, and works on both hourly and flat fee bases so that his services are affordable and clients know before the legal fight starts how much their legal fees will cost.

The Mathews Group, LC was founded by attorney Joshua T. Mathews. Mr. Mathews started his career as a Tax and Transactions attorney, but was quickly recruited into business and personal civil litigation.



Mr. Mathews practices in areas from bankruptcy to federal criminal defense, (selected by the Department of Justice as a member of the CJA Panel). He opened The Mathews Group, LC because he fundamentally disagreed with many traditional legal practices, especially hourly billing, which in addition to creating a "blank check" for the attorney, dis-incentivized clients from communicating with their attorney about their legal issues.

After completing my education and working for 7+ years with a downtown Kansas City business law firm, I started a solo practice dedicated to serving the needs of my clients as effectively and as efficiently as possible. I keep my overhead low so that I am able to provide competent legal assistance for fees lower than big law firms. I put my masters in tax law degree to use in my practice which focuses on estate planning and probate law, where I was recognized in 2008 and 2009 as a Super Lawyer-Rising Star in Kansas and Missouri, taxation, business law and traffic/DUIs. I also have an extensive practice in divorces and adoptions. Finally, my office also serves the needs of clients in landlord/tenant, real estate and contract law.

Malissa L. Walden is a native Kansan with an international perspective. After years of living abroad, she returned to pursue her life-long dream of helping others through the practice of law. She has dedicated her career to public service and fully understands the needs of her clients. Ms. Waldenâs main areas of practice include Bankruptcy, Estate Planning, and Domestic.

Not only was Ms. Walden the first attorney at her firm to practice under the new Bankruptcy Code; she also assisted attorneys across the state to become Electronic Case Filing compliant. Due to her experience in Bankruptcy, she is aware that it is not the best option for every client. Because of this, she has a history of advising clients on Bankruptcy alternatives, and negotiating settlements with Collection and Credit Card Companies. She has helped to guide clients through the stressful actions necessary to deal with creditors. Ms. Walden knows and can explain clearly exactly what rights her clients have and how to respond to creditorsâ unwanted calls.

As the previous Elder Law Project Manager for a statewide non-profit, she has handled all stages of Estate Planning, appeared at Social Security Disability Appeal Hearings, advised clients regarding Medicaid/Division of Assets, Medicare, and Health-related collection. She has met with clients and given presentations throughout the state regarding these issues.

Ms. Walden has a history of quality representation.
